Vihaan Team Conducted the event VIHAAN 2011 in BIMTECH on 27th-28th August.The events began with the inaugural ceremony in the morning in the presence of corporate bigwigs such as Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Sr. V.P., Canon India Pvt. Ltd., the Chief Guest, and Mr. Rajesh Agarwal, CEO Micromax Informatics Ltd., the Guest of Honour. The plethora of events saw the participants competing to prove their mettle in various events focused towards bringing forth new talent and testing not only business acumen, but literary skills and cultural performances as well.
The competitions began with ‘HR Quotient’ to identify the best future HR manager, on the topic “HR manager for Indian cricket team” and ‘The Social Entrepreneur’ which was the CSR event to identify opportunities that exist in the most down-trodden areas of Greater NOIDA. In addition to this, there was a business event called ‘Vitruvian’, which was the ultimate test for management skills, leadership and endurance. The JAM session was moderated by the famous JAM master, Mr. Kartik Ramaswamy, SBU Head of Levi’s India Pvt. Ltd. The other events of the day included ‘Bulls & Bears’, a stock market simulation event, which attracted a lot of participants. The judges for various events included senior executives from the corporate world like, Mr. Praveen Kumar, General Manager (HR), JSPL; Ms. Ester Martinez, Co-founder and Managing Editor, People Matters; Mr. T G Keswani, GM Jaypee Group; Mr. Rajiv Sahdev, VP (HR), Moser Baer India; Mr. Tejasvi Mohanram, CEO and Founder, Tetra Media Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Pradeep Sarmah, Founder Centre for Rural Development; Mr. Brijesh Kumar, Retd. IAS; Mr. Anshu Gupta, Founder of NGO Goonj, and many more.
A quizzing competition, ‘Fire Fight’ was also organized to test the business knowledge of the participants. Some gaming events like ‘Blitzkrieg’, a Counter-Strike 1.6 gaming contest, also attracted lots of eyes and participants. The ‘Informals’, an assortment of small, fun-filled games and events, saw enthusiastic participation from all quarters. GDP, our acronym for Guitars, Drums and Piano, was the war of the bands event. The terrific performances were a huge hit and a perfect prelude to the most-awaited event, The Pro-Night. The famous Delhi band ‘Them Clones’ set the stage on fire and had everyone dancing to their music for the next 90 minutes.
All the events went through so smoothly that the team members were rather amazed at the seamless functioning and smoothness with which they had pulled it off. That night Raghav Kumar and Abhishek Malik took a triumphant walk down the vacant area. Their experiment of organizing a rock concert had just turned out to be a great success. The first day ended successfully with zeal, vigor and hope for even a more happening second day.
The next day began with ‘Takraar’, the debate competition, where students from various colleges engaged in a war of words on the topic “Is Bollywood a cheap rip-off of Hollywood?” The chief guest and also a judge for the event was none other than the renowned Bollywood filmmaker Mr. Mahesh Bhatt. The other two judges were Mr. Ajay Kanchan and Mr. Aman Uppal. The question answer round that followed, witnessed enthusiastic participation from the audience. Finally, Mr. Mahesh Bhatt shared his take on the topic and advised students to live life with the originality of their dreams and not just blindly follow what the world wants.
‘BIZZMARK’, the marketing competition sponsored by Canon, aimed to judge the participants’ skills in identifying customer needs and thereby presenting and selling their products to the judges. It was a three round competition in which students presented very innovative products and marketing ideas. The judges for this event were Mr. Sumit Pahwa, DGM (Marketing), Tata DOCOMO, GSM and Mr. Prem Chand Palety, Chief Executive, C-Fore. Plan 1.0, the Business Plan competition, provided an opportunity for budding managers and entrepreneurs to showcase their entrepreneurial skills to an eminent jury comprising venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and academicians. The theme of this event was ‘Urban Entrepreneurship’ and the judges were Ms. Vijaylaxmi, VP Centrum Capital Ltd.; Mr. Tarun Matta, Founder of IIMJobs.com and Mr. Anil Srivatsa, Strategic Consultant at Digital Media Startup Ventures.
‘Nukkad Natak’, the street play competition was a platform for the students to showcase their acting talent on a social topic without any stage, curtains or retakes. The evening was a celebration of talents in cultural events. ‘Bailamos’, the dance competition, had the teams portray a story using Bollywood songs and also tested their choreography skills in a popular dance form. ‘Bedazzled’, the fashion show sponsored by Killer Jeans, was a truly magical affair. In the first round, the teams left the audience spellbound by their depiction of the richness of Indian marriages and the second round gave them a chance to indulge in contemporary as well as funky accessories.
The fest came to a close with the Awards Ceremony followed by a DJ night hosted by DJ Sash. All events had gone through so smoothly that the participants could not believe that this was BIMTECH’s first attempt at organizing such a fest. They were full of praise and the thunderous applause was followed up with appreciative mails from participants as well as guests. This was made possible by the support of a galaxy of sponsors including Hyundai Motors India Ltd, Canon India Pvt. Ltd., Mahindra Solar, Vodafone, SAIL, NTPC, THDC India Ltd., Kerala Tech, Killer Jeans, Lanco Infratech, GFL, UFlex, Orient Green Power, Hira Group, The Great India Place, Worlds of Wonder, Hotel Grand Sunset (Shimla), On Stage, HT Mint and Management Paradise.
‘Vihaan 2011’ ended with great pomp and show, leaving behind a triumphant BIMTECH fraternity and a tired yet content and jubilant Team Vihaan.

The Great Debate-2011
"Should the Civil Society be Allowed to Participate in Law Making"
Majlis conducted the first event of the academic calendar 2011-2012, The Great Debate 2011. It was held in the BIMTECH premises on July 14, 2011. The topic for the debate was "Should the Civil Society be Allowed to Participate in Law Making". The show witnessed ten panellists, five for the motion and five against. The moderator for the event was Prof. Sunil Sangra, while the judges were Dr. J.Shettigar and Prof. P.S Nagpal.
The participants included both the first and the second year students. The screenings were conducted for two days in the form of Group Discussions. From around 150 registrations, the panellists for the main Debate zeroed down to 10. The topics for the group discussions ranged from IPL to the need for nuclear power in the developing countries.
Majlis took the opportunity to organise the first event, The Great Debate 2011 ,of BIMTECH with immense support from Prof. Sangeeta Shukla,Mentor Majlis ,Faculty, Administration, Staff and Students. The winners of The Great Debate 2011 were:

Corporates and B schools throng BIMTECH National Quiz Competition
Cognicioun 2010-11 hosted and conducted by the famous Mr Giri Balasubramanium affectionately called "Pickbrain" on 5th December at Birla Institute of Management Technology saw participation across the quizzing spectrum of Delhi and other parts of India as well. With institutes like FMS, IIFT Delhi, IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon, IMI, BIMTECH among other colleges fought it out against corporates such as Accenture, Mint, NTPC, GE, FICCI, Reliance Infra, Commonwealth and many more. The event sponsored by NTPC , JSPL , Birla Tyres, Total Group witnessed the participation of more than 80 teams across students and corporates alike.Our event partners included names such as Pizza Hut, Lotto, Pagalguy, MBAUniverse and Red FM.
Rounds included the prelims followed by the final round with eight podium finishers with equal representatives from both the campus and corporate world. More than 200 executives and students waited and watched with bated breath as the teams on stage fought for the top prizes. Six gruelling rounds and about two and a half hours later amidst much excitement and a nail-biting finish to the quiz (tie breaker), the winners were announced.
Rohan Khanna and Sandipan Chowdhury from Accenture bagged the top prize followed by Ninad and Abhishek representing GE and Contract Advertising. The third position was grabbed by Avinash Mudaliar from Indiatimes and Sujoy Dasgupta from FICCI. The winners of the crossword competition were Gaurav Chandwani and Jatin Rajauria from BIMTECH followed by Haresh L again from BIMTECH.
The intensity and electrifying atmosphere of the quiz due to the close finish between the top three was compared by Mr Giri Balasubramanium to the Tata Crucibles and referred to as one of the finest quiz contests to have been conducted by him. I am sure BIMTECH will try and emulate this great achievement for coming events as well. Cognicioun in its second year has already achieved great heights. The coming years will see it grow even further at the able hands of future BIMTECHIANS.
Inter College Street Play by Unmaad
UNMAAD the theatre club of BIMTECH which is comparatively a new society is spreading its wings in the campus and outside. One such feather in its cap was the inter-college street play competition PRAHAAR organized on 30th of October. To make the event more attractive whole campus was decorated like a village with matkis, khats, grass and rangolies all around.
Event was judged by the two esteemed judges Prof. K.K. Krishnan, founder of UNMAAD and Mr. Hemant Mishra a young theatre artist from JAMGHAT. JAMGHA is an NGO established in 2003, which is using theatre as a medium to provide better lives to the street children mainly in Delhi and NCR.
Each performance highlighted a different issue for example: performance of IMI was based on the poor management of CWG and Galgotia Business School performance was based on corruption. The first prize was won by BIMTECH highlighting the indifferent behavior of people toward the most important things in life which was Rs. 5000 and Pizza Hut coupons and second prize was won by IMI which was Rs. 3000 and Pizza Hut coupons.
The rest of the participating teams were awarded with Rs. 2000 each. Audience was also awarded with Pizza Hut coupons on answering simple questions. Sponsors for this event were S.R. Jain Jewelers, Sunrise Autoworld Ltd., Khurana’s Gift Emporium and Pizza Hut. Event was appreciated by one and all and it highlighted the team spirit of UNMAAD and BIMTECH students.
Spic Macay Chapter 2010: Sufi music concert
‘If music be the food of love, then play on ’thus go the famous lines by Shakespeare. The much awaited musical evening was organised by the cultural conduit of the college on 29th October. Caught in tight schedules and a bustling life here in the campus, this gratification in the form of music came as a breath of fresh air and we welcomed it with open arms. It was a proud and resplendent moment for us at BIMTECH to have the privilege of listening to some of the most celebrated artists from the world of music, Dr Madan Gopal Singh ji India's leading Sufi lyricist, composer, singer and scholar along with his group. Unfortunately the guitarist from the team couldn’t make it so he was ably replaced by the guitarist from our college band as requested by Shri Madan Gopal Singh ji. As anticipated it turned out to be a rejuvenating and invigorating experience for all.
The opportunity of organising this event was presented to BIMTECH by Spic Macay.
GET THAT NUMBER RIGHT!
55 students of BIMTECH chased the elusive numbers of Sudoku on October 24, 2010. The event was the first ever Sudoku intra- institute format of BIMTECH organized by Rows & Diagonals Club.
After three grilling rounds Prateek Chaturvedi, a student of PGDM 2nd year, emerged as winner, followed by Poonam Biyani on second position and Mita Aggarwal scoring the third position.The competition showcased that BIMTECHians are crazy about Sudoku and are gain for tougher tests.
The event was graced by the presence of the Director, Dr. H. Chaturvedi and the club’s patron and mentor, Prof. K. K. Krishnan.
Panel Discussion Hosted by Majlis on 19th October, 2010
Words have the power to change, and a change can cause a revolution....
The voices of BIMTECH voiced their opinion at the panel discussion “We the Bimtechians” hosted by Majlis on: “Would hosting the 2020 Olympics would make India swifter, higher, stronger?” The selected participants as well as the audience took part in the discussion which was held on 19th October 2010 with great zeal and enthusiasm. The moderator for the panel discussion was none other than Prof. Dhruv Chak, one of the most dynamic personalities of BIMTECH. He took the entire discussion to a whole new perspective which clearly enlightened the participants and the audience. The judges for this discussion were Prof. Sunil Sangra and Prof.Sangeeta Shukla.
The competition was tough and intense, which proved to be a tough job for the judges in selecting the winners. The winners were judged based on their performance, content and participation in the discussion. The first prize was bagged by Tarun Vats from PGDM (2nd yr) and the second place was secured by Prerana Sharma of PGDM IB (2nd yr).
The main highlight of the event was the participation of the audience, who wholeheartedly competed for the best audience prize which was won by Prerna Karwa from PGDM IB (2nd yr) and Vinod from PGDM.
Majlis, in hosting such events believes in providing a platform for the great voices of BIMTECH to compete and also to build and improve themselves and we believe that we are striding forward in our effort to do so.....
Workshop by Mr. Parnab Mukherjee
Somebody has truly said “You can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart” and Majlis believes in the same...
Majlis, the Debating and Theatre Society of BIMTECH organised a three day workshop for all the first year students from 18th -20th August, on Public Speaking which was conducted by one of the renowned public speakers of India-Mr Parnab Mukherjee. He is strongly attached with the UN working in South-East Asia, with his specialisation in North-East India. He is a media consultant. As a journalist, he had been attached with Sports World, The Telegraph and a Bengali newspaper called Pratidin. He is also an experienced theatre personality and an active social worker in the Northeast belt of India. He has been conducting workshops on public speaking, quizzing and theatre all over India.
The first day of the workshop began with the inaugural welcome note to Mr Parnab Mukherjee by Debal Rishi Banerjee, Secretary of MAJLIS. The day also witnessed the felicitation of the junior co-ordinators by Director of BIMTECH, Dr H.Chaturvedi. Mr Parnab Mukherjee then took the session forward by first emphasizing on the basic and fundamentals of Public Speaking, importance of structure and content of any speech and different approaches to Public Speaking.
According to Mr Parnab Mukherjee the bottlenecks that one normally faces during public speaking is whether one is speaking in the right kind of flow or not, whether it is a “smart speaking or effective speaking” or is it the quantum of English that matters or is it the presentation that counts. The workshop then progressed with the discussion of the basic fundamentals of Public speaking which included maintaining the correct posture and gesture during delivery of speech. He emphasised on the perseverance of a good speech by essentially maintaining continuous eye contact with the audience. He also continued saying that a good public speaker should never be accusatory. He also said that what matters more in a good speech is how the orator is heard rather than the pronunciation of words. A good speech must have an element of humour in it but never have sarcastic jokes, was the point that touched the young budding minds of the Bimtechians. After one hour of thorough knowledge session, Mr Parnab Mukherjee answered the queries that were raised by the students, which according to him were problems related to confidence level, pronunciation and pace of speech.
The second day of the workshop continued resolving the problems that one normally encounters during public speaking. He emphasized on speech clarity, facts and figures and developing confidence via examples which are geo-specific, which would thus give a new perspective to the speech. Throughout the workshop Mr Parnab Mukherjee, showed images and clippings of riots, violence and the tragedies happening in India and around the world, which we humans often tend to neglect. Such value driven lessons which are never taught in any B-school was definitely an eye-opener for the students.
The last day of the three day workshop ended with an exciting and thrilling pictorial extempore competition which witnessed the participation of around thirty heads. The winners were declared by Mr Parnab Mukherjee himself at the end of the session. The first prize was bagged by Annu Malik(PGDM) followed by Samar Singh(PGDM-RM) in the second position and Sudhi Soni(PGDM)securing the third place. In the end, Dr H.Chaturvedi, Director of BIMTECH graced the occasion by duly honouring Mr Parnab Mukherjee for conducting the three day workshop and enriching the mind of the students.
It was indeed a fruitful and thought provoking workshop because it made us think beyond ourselves and to the think of the nation and the world beyond our horizon....
AIMA National Student management Quiz 2010
The grand finale of the AIMA National Student management Quiz 2010 on 5th March at the BIMTECH campus distinguished itself as a stimulating affair with quizzers from all over India fighting for the ultimate prize and a finish on the winner’s podium. It was a memorable evening for BIMTECH as it played host to a congregation of eminent industrialists apart from the winning teams from the regional rounds. The final round qualifiers comprised of teams from IMT Ghaziabad, ICFAI Hyderabad, IMS Varanasi among others.
The quizmaster for the event Mr SPS Jaggi had the crowd in splits and the underlying seriousness of the quiz show translated into two and a half hours of pure entertainment with the finalists gushing and despairing at times to pumping their fists as they faltered and succeeded at the wonderfully crafted questions. While the competition was cutthroat, the rounds like Kismat Connection, Hard Kaur, Ad ware and Final Countdown added to the fun element and kept the atmosphere charged up with emotions. Prizes galore for the audience and Mr SPS Jaggi’s innovative content punctuated with his sense of humour added a dash of colour.
The team from IMT Ghaziabad was declared the winner at the end of what was an intoxicating and thrilling event. A great show superseded by the accomplishments of the winning teams and the enthusiasm of the crowd would be surely remembered at BIMTECH in the coming years.

Bharat Buzz on 14th August
To celebrate the spirit of Independence QCB organized “Bharat Buzz “on 14th August. The star attraction being the famous corporate team of NTPC Mr. K M Prashanth and Mr. Sujit Varkey who were the quizmasters for the day .It was not astonishing to see the whole hearted participation of Bimtechians as 36 teams vied to make through the preliminary round.
It was then a series of tricky questions for the six teams making it through the prelims, three each from the first as well as second year. The questions also intrigued the audience as was evident from the mass participation in the audience rounds that day. The team from PGDM-2 was declared the winner of followed by teams of PGDM-1 at the second and the third spot. It was an exhilarating experience, a wild ride through the jungle of information in our minds but overall it was an entertaining event, an event BIMTECH would remember and strive to emulate year after year.
Inter-Department debate by Majlis
Policies regarding the Modern Retail trade in India had been an issue of academic discussion for several years. In it’s yet another initiative to link the Indian Retail industry to the global platform the government of India invited responses to the discussion paper floated by it on the issue of allowing FDI in multi brand retail trading in India.
Majlis, the Debating Society of Birla Institute of Management Technology, organised an inter-department debate on the same topic on 21 July 2010. The students being one of the stakeholders in the future of retail in India actively participated in the event.
After a much heated discussion, each participant concluded their viewpoint after a series of questions posted by the audience. The discussion ended with the note that it is more of an evolutionary process rather than a revolutionary process and the change has to be brought about in a calibrated manner, which would definitely give a boost to Indian Economy over a period of time and help expand the Modern Retail trade in India keeping the interest of the largely diversified Unorganized Sector.
To conclude on a positive note, the following students stood out of the lot and were rewarded.
Abhinav Sharma (PGDM-1st Year) won the first prize, spoke in favour of the motion.
Ankit Sharma (PGDM) won the second prize while Nisha Prasad (RM-2nd Year) won third prize. Both of them also spoke in favour of motion.
This enlightening discussion left a mark on each and every student present there.
Congnicioun 2010:Bond with the best
28th February, a day fresh in all of our memories as the day when Cognicioun 2010, the inter college business quiz was organised at BIMTECH for the first time in its history as top business colleges and quizzing teams from the corporate world mingled and rubbed shoulders for the top honours. With participation of quizzers from IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon, FMS Delhi, IIT DMS, FORE, IIFT Delhi, BIMTECH along with teams from Ernst and Young, Mint, McCann Erikson, HCL the affair was expected to be more than a run of the mill event.
After the preliminary round which was held late in the afternoon, Mr. Avinash Mudaliar, our quizmaster for the event, a veteran in the quizzing circuit set the perfect tone to a show which was fated to be a great success.
The corporate team from Mint was declared the winner of Cognicioun 2010 followed by IMT Ghaziabad as the runners up. It was an exhilarating experience, a wild ride through the jungle of information in our minds but overall it was an entertaining evening, an evening BIMTECH would remember and strive to emulate year after year.

The latest e-week February 2010 named
Avsar was exploring ‘India: Opportunities Within’. In an event called ‘
Swadesh’ some enthusiastic students visited a nearby village looking for problems which can be converted into opportunities. A special ‘Graffiti Wall’ was created in the campus, on which students expressed their ideas with the use of colours. ‘Live Wire’ was one event that tested the problem-solving abilities of students by presenting a real life case in front of them.
The Union Budget smacks of populism
Majlis, the debating and theatre society of BIMTECH, set the ball rolling with a debate on the topic ‘The Union budget smacks of populism’. The winners of the debate were felicitated by the former Union Finance Minister Mr. Yashwant Sinha. On 15th August, the society conducted a debate for the event Pratibha on the topic ‘The Freedom movement of India is still incomplete’. In September, Majlis, in association with United Friends of Earth, the environmental society of BIMTECH, conducted a debate and a poster making competition on issues related to the environment.
Workshop by Mr. Salim Arif
To help the students understand cinema and theatre better, Majlis, organized a workshop from 16th to 18th September, which was conducted by an eminent theatre personality Mr. Salim Arif who is a popular figure on television and cinema and has worked in television classics like Bharat ek Khoj, Chanakya and Chandrakanta and was also associated with hits like Maachis, Gadar and Guru. He began with the traditions of performing arts in India and then shifted to the entertainment scenario of the early 20th century. He traced the growth of silent movies, the changes in theatre, the growth of the talkies and the imminent rise of commercial cinema. The participants appreciated the beauty of works like the Apu Trilogy, Awara, Pyaasa, Bandini and Sangam. Three movies viz. Shatranj ke Khiladi, Om Shanti Om and Chicago were screened. The students were also introduced to world cinema with the choicest of French, Italian and Japanese movies. The workshop was a revelation to the students. Everyone chimed in to say that all these years they considered filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Bimal Roy to be quite esoteric. The workshop succeeded in removing all the wrong notions about parallel cinema and enlightened them to its subtle nuances.
Workshop on public Speaking by Mr. Pranab Mukherji
The changing times cause new needs to arise and in order to meet them Majlis came in touch with Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, arguably India's best live Quiz Master, for a workshop on Public Speaking. He has been a regular feature at quizzes at NITIE, NMIMS, IITs and various colleges of the University of Delhi. The workshop lasted 4 days. He highlighted the rules of public speaking and the importance of posture, handling the microphone, eye contact, gestures, on-stage movement, voice modulation and the use of time on the stage. He also touched upon practical demonstration and structuring of ideas and sentences.
One Act Play Competition
On 26th November, Majlis conducted a one-act play competition in association with United Friends of Earth. The event was special as it saw the senior batch passing on the baton to the juniors. Debal Rishi Banerjee was declared the new Secretary and Adhiraj Sengupta the next Joint Secretary. The senior members were felicitated for their contributions
